20 years since The Young Gods formed, you might have expected the rest of the rock world to have caught up with them. Instead, it has receded, as if in fear of the 21st century, into the retro, the kitsch, the neo-conservative, the corporate facsimile of yesteryear.
The Young Gods are further ahead than ever.
TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY XXY
To mark their twenty years of existence, The Young Gods will orchestrate a yearlong series of celebrations and events. The group will release a Best Of cd, which will be followed by a new album in April 2006. It will also present a number of performances, including the « New Repertory » concert, the « Classical Repertory » concert in the company of a small symphonic orchestra, « Aquanaut », « Amazonia Ambient Project » and « TYG Play Woodstock ». The diversity, precision and quality of their register bespeak prodigious creativity and exemplary open-mindedness.
The Young Gods in concert, in power trio formation, present their new repertory, accelerator to the floor, and eyes gleaming with risk. Half the songs are new, and will be released on disk in 2006. These multifaceted compositions sparkle like diamonds. The Gods’ mastery of sound is such that they make the clothes of concertgoers vibrate. The surprise comes from the emphasis on guitar sounds.
This performance presents a Best Of repertory interpreted by The Young Gods accompanied by a small symphonic orchestra. The most savage electronic rock lovingly embraces classical academic musicianship. In their symphonic presentation, The Young Gods’ compositions deploy their full splendour.
The show was commissioned by the Geneva Science Museum to explore the theme of water. It is conceived by and performed with Loopmatic, a duo of artists from the experimental film scene, Caroline Suard and Stéphane Detruche. They work with 16mm film and project loops of images which they create and sometimes transform via extreme chemical treatment. The Young Gods play along with the images in a 6-point spatial arrangement of sound developed
by their sound engineer Bertrand Siffert. The result is an entrancing visual soundscape.
AMAZONIA AMBIENT PROJECT
A sonic conference based on the experiences of anthropologist Jeremy Narby. It deals with Amazonian reality and its current implications for ecology, shamanism and the dialogue of cultures. For this performance, The Young Gods are in small formation (computer, sampler and percussion), as they mix excerpts from their ambient album « Music For Artificial Clouds » with sounds recorded in the Amazon: a live work of electronic improvisation. This performance, which was showcased at the World Cultural Forum in Sao Paulo, can be presented in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese or German.
THE YOUNG GODS PLAY WOODSTOCK
In this performance, the band plays a live soundtrack as the film « Woodstock » is projected onto a giant screen. They replay musical sequences from the film, manipulate voices, remix the original soundtrack, all in perfect synchronisation. Thus, Crosby, Stills and Nash perform industrial rock rather than crystalline folk, and Jimi Hendrix distorts the national anthem of … Switzerland. In this hybridization of electronica and rock, The Young Gods deploy their sonic skills with crowd-pleasing panache.
